Beginning of the Federation and Background
After the reorganization of the Co-operative Movement during the 1970 decade the need arose for a Strong National level Co –operative organization to support the Agricultural and Consumer Co-operative Societies to carry out their functions.
In order to fulfill this requirement the three leading Co –operative Institutions at the time, namely,
01. The all Ceylon Agricultural Producers and Distributers Co –operative Federation
02. The Northern Agricultural Producers and Distributers Co operative Federation
03. The All Ceylon Consumer Co –operative Federation
Were amalgamated on 01st March of 1973 to form “MARKFED”, Sri Lanka Co –operative Marketing Federation Limited. The membership of this Organization is composed of Multi-purpose Co –operative Societies And Agricultural Co operative Co- operative Societies. Its present membership is 158.
The Vision of the Federation
Our vision is, “to become the most prominent Co–operative Institution engaged in purchasing, processing, marketing and exporting local agricultural goods and other essential food items.”
Functions of the Federation
Our function is to act as the topmost organization among Co –operative Societies that helps to maintain a reasonable price structure in the market place and contribute productively to the welfare of the Sri Lankan population and National Economy, through the purchasing, marketing, import and export of agricultural and other essential goods, with the productive contribution of the workforce.
The Aims and Objectives of the Federation
- To safeguard the Co–operative Identity while adhering to the Co-operative Principals and Co- operative Ethics,
- To contribute to the steady development of its Co-operative societies
- To especially fulfil the needs of the Sri Lankan farming community and the community at large, and to engage in the agricultural field an affiliated fields for the steady economic development and the improvement of the social and cultural capabilities of these communities.
- To act as the guardian as well as guide and National and International Representative of Agricultural Co-operative Societies.
- To spread, strengthen and develop the Agricultural Co-operative Movement,
are the objectives of the Federation.
